Drain pipe question

So I just picked up this 180 gallon tank and it is drilled with 2 overflow boxes, I was wondering for inside each overflow box should I have a 90 elbow on each hole with one facing up and the other facing down? Should there be a pipe going up coming off the 90 elbow facing up, I guess using it as a safety pipe? And should I loop both drains in each overflow to each other so that I get only 1 drain coming from each overflow making it only 2 drain pipes down to the sump instead of 4?
Thanks

Looking @ the depth of the boxes & the fact the holes are close to the bottom I would use 2 pipes, 1 in each hole with 1 higher than the other to act as an emergency.
The lower pipe should be just high enough to make water flow into the box quiet.

Got it, and from the back of the tank, would you tee both pipes to get 1 output pipe per overflow box?

There is a debate about combining pipes, up to you but it would have to be upsized.
I would leave the overflow pipes separate & NOT under water in the sump.
This way you can hear them if they operate & know something is amiss.

I would have it plumbed straight down ad much ad possible before you add a 90". So from the bulckhead go straight down, then add 90" or 45" if you like depend on the sump and your plumbing design.

T'were my tank, I'd dump the two teeny/tiny boxes with a single one that spans the length of the tank. You would get much better surface skimming performance and be able to use a proper bean overflow. Also, check those cross braces for stress cracks - had issues with that on my old ML180.
